This June, Democratic Women of the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes (DWSTFL) will be convening in Seneca Falls, NY for our Fifth Annual Conference. It is most fitting that we celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Women's Suffrage in NYS in the Birthplace of Women's Rights. We will pay homage to the women on whose "shoulders we stand" - the suffragists who were the hearts and minds of political and civic engagement. Please join us!
DWSTFL was founded because it is important that women be engaged and involved in the political process. Women remain underrepresented at all levels of elected office and one way to change that is to encourage them to “step off the sidelines” and run for office.
Since 2013, DWSTFL has identified, recruited and supported numerous amazing women who have run for office. They have run for Congress, the NYS Senate, NYS Assembly, Mayor. They have been elected to City Councils, Town Boards, and County Legislatures.
But, at local and state levels, women remain under-represented. It is here that we see the real opportunity to grow politically. I would encourage anyone who is passionate for protecting her community to consider getting involved at the local or state government level. Coming off of the 2016 elections, there is no more critical time to get engaged and set the stage for a campaign in 2017, 2018 or beyond.
And keep in mind, increasing the number of women experienced in local office increases the pool of quality candidates for higher office later on. This is a first and necessary step if we want to have the interests of women’s health, education, and economic welfare adequately represented at the federal level.
There are many qualified, tenacious and eager women who might be interested in stepping up to the plate to serve our local communities by running for office. Do you know any? Are you one? Contact us if you are. We're here to help!
